During open wall hours, climbing wall staff members are on duty to make sure that all policies and procedures are followed and that equipment and facilities meet industry standards to create a safe and enjoyable environment. Climbing Wall staff are responsible for the day to day operations and supervision of the indoor climbing wall and bouldering courtyard areas. Attention must be paid to safety (proper use of equipment, belay technique, appropriate behavior by participants, etc.) as a primary concern. Each Climbing Wall employee must also display the upmost degree of professionalism and customer service as they are front-line staff interacting with patrons in the Ramsey Student Center. Climbing Wall employees must also effectively demonstrate teaching techniques in belay clinics paying particular attention to harness use, proper belay technique, knot tying, and appropriate behavior expected of climbing wall participants.
- Must have current certification: – American Red Cross CPRo, First-Aid, AED or ability to acquire within first month of hire
- Belay certification at the Ramsey Climbing Wall
- Must be able to carry out the following skills competently
- Fitting a harness on yourself as well as others
- Tying a figure-8 follow thru knot w/ a half fisherman’s back-up
- Proper use of several belay devices (tube style, assisted locking, etc.)
- Ability to answer important questions correctly on the general use of the climbing wall
- Ability to make decisions to manage risk and respond to emergency situations
- Assist staff with general maintenance of the facility – route setting and cleaning
- Physical Requirements (must be able to):
- Stand/walk for long periods
- Climbing
- Use of ladder
- Bending/stooping
- Kneeling/squatting
- Reaching/grasping
- Overhead work
- Pushing/pulling
- Repetitive use of hands
- Handling chemicals
- Lift at least 25 lbs
- Reading – Strong analytical skills
- Computer skills (entering participant information using keyboard and numerical keypad, mouse)
- Customer interaction (strong verbal, written, and listening skills)
- Attention to detail (long attention span, multiple stimuli, manage priorities)
- Technical rope work involved with climbing
