American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor

The purpose of the instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach the Red Cross Lifeguarding, Shallow Water Lifeguarding, Waterfront Skills, Water park Skills, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers, Administering Emergency Oxygen and Blood borne Pathogens Training: Preventing Disease Transmission courses and/or modules. Instructor candidates will also become familiar with Junior Lifeguarding, Lifeguard Management, Safety Training for Swim Coaches and Basic Water Rescue. Participants MUST attend all class dates. 

Prerequisites

​​• Be at least 17 years old on or before last day of the instructor course

• 300-yard continuous swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both

• Tread water using legs only for 2 minutes without support or stopping

• Within 1 minute and 40 seconds, swim 20 yards, surface dive to 7 - 10 feet and retrieve a 10lb brick. Return to surface and swim back to starting point with both hands holding brick and keeping face at the surface. Exit the water without using ladder or steps

• Possess one of the following:

  • A current American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED

  • A current American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid and either an American Red Cross certificate for CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer or an American Red Cross certificate for CPR/AED for Lifeguards

  • An equivalent certificate from another organization

American Red Cross Lifeguarding 

This course is designed to teach skills and knowledge to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies. Participants must successfully pass a precourse swim exam, skills check, and written exams to obtain certification (Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR for Professional Rescuer, current for 2 years). Participants MUST attend all class dates of a session.

Review: American Red Cross Lifeguarding (Blended Learning Format)

This class will provide the opportunity to review course content by incorporating blended learning format with online training sessions, classroom skills and water rescue activities. Participants must successfully complete blended learning components, pass a precourse swim exam, skills check, and written exams to obtain certification (Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR for Professional Rescuer, current for 2 years).

Prerequisite: Current or recently expired (less than 30 days) American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certification

Course Dates: 

  • Saturday, March 18 12-8pm
  • Sunday, March 19 12-8pm
  • Saturday, April 22 12-8pm

*Course Price: $65 student - $75 faculty/staff/dependent/alumni - $85 community 

*In addition to above cost, students must pay $35 fee at time of blended learning online registration through the American Red Cross. This fee is non-refundable through UGA Recreational Sports.

CPR/AED/First Aid for Professional Rescuer

The American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers & Health Care Providers course is designed to teach those with a duty to act (professional rescuers and health care providers) the knowledge and skills needed to respond appropriately to breathing and cardiac emergencies until more advanced medical personnel take over. This includes the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) to care for a victim experiencing cardiac arrest.

  • Saturday, February 25 10am-5pm

Review: CPR/AED/First Aid for Professional Rescuers 

The review course provides instruction for those who have a current or recently expired certification. Instruction is provided as a review before participants are tested. To be eligible to participate in a review course, a participant must possess a certificate in the same course that is current or expired for no more than 30 days. Upon successful completion of the review course, the participant receives a certificate that is valid for 2 years from date of completion of the review course.

  • Sunday, February 26 2pm-6pm

Challenge: CPR/AED/First Aid for Professional Rescuers

Challenges provide individual testing for participants for wish to be recertified in either Adult & Pediatric CPR/AED, and/or CPR/AED/First Aid for the Professional Rescuer. Instructors will not provide review or instruction. Participants must successfully complete the practical skills and pass the written test(s) with a minimum score of 80 percent. A participant who does not pass the challenge will be referred back to the appropriate course.

Adult & Pediatric CPR/AED with First Aid

The American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED program helps participants recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies. The courses in this program teach skills that participants need to know to give immediate care to a suddenly injured or ill person until more advanced medical personnel arrive and take over.
