Academic Credits plus PE 1090 credit through UGA Costa Rica Geology/Outdoor Recreation Maymester

Available in the Fall, Spring, and Costa Rica Maymester

In this class, students are required to participate adventure activities offered through the UGA Outdoor Recreation trip schedule (evenings and weekends).  This is a great way to learn outdoor activity skills and discover many natural resources in the southeast or abroad through the Maymester option.  Course participants pay the student fee listed for each UGA Outdoor Recreation trip. 1 PE credit earned.

Available in the Fall and Spring 

This course will challenge students to actively work together to solve problems by participating in activities and elements offered through the UGA Challenge Course. Participants will participate in a belay clinic as well as on the outdoor low and indoor/outdoor high challenge courses. Participats will learn about group formation and dynamics, teaching and facilitation styles, the experiential learning cycle, and risk management. An additional lab fee is required for this course. 1 PE credit earned.

Available in the Fall and Spring

This class exposes students to the basic fundamentals of backpacking. Topics to be covered include appropriate equipment selection, dressing and clothing for the outdoor environment, camp cooking, land navigation, and expedition behavior. Class meetings allow students to have hands-on learning with packs, sleep systems, tents, and camp cookware. The class culminates in a 2-day backpacking trip where students are engaging in a group-led excursion to the backcountry. A range of 6-12 miles of hiking is what one can expect to do on this trip. An additional lab fee is required for this course. 1 PE credit earned.

Available in the Fall and Spring

This class, taught by a PADI-certified dive instructor, will take students through the process of earning a PAD Basic Open Water SCUBA Certification. Students will be required to complete all PADI in-class modules, a swim check, two pool sessions, and a weekend-long qualifying dive trip. An additional lab fee is required for this course. 1 PE credit earned.
